Scrivener and Ulysses are also wonderful tools, but I think Mellel has the edge for academics. Mellel is an advanced, multilingual word processor built for Mac OS X. I am also working on a dissertation and used Scrivener and Ulysses before switching to Mellel. I think that composing directly in Mellel (with Bookends) is the best choice for academic writing. Still, I think it is the best choice out there. He is only one person however, not a big company, so there are some limitations to what he can do.

With Mellel 4 (that I'm deciding if I should upgrade to), some Scrivener like features will become available to me-or so I understand. I use this feature frequently, and for some time now, Mellel has been duplicating the quoted text between the backslashes an unpredictable number of times. first programs to do Bibliography on any computer and the developer understands what is needed.

I use other apps for PDF reading (Skim), annotating (Marginnote), manipulating (PdfPen) and storing research (DevonThink)-in other words I don't use Scrivener's reference material storing capabilities. If I use Scrivener then I use Mellel, but the converse is of course not true. Reliable: Mellel is built for heavy-duty work.
